BALDUR’S GATE 3 WRITING
Please note that in-game footage on this page is intentionally less tightly cut so as to better illustrate the included dialogues’ placement in-game as well as the wider situations they comprise. Feel free to skim at your leisure!
BEX & DANIS AT LAST LIGHT INN
Bex and Danis are a tiefling couple who are hoping to travel to Baldur’s Gate. If they survive, Bex can be met again at the Last Light Inn in Act 2. Here Bex explains that their group was attacked by Absolute cultists en route, and fears that Danis is among those killed. The player can rescue Danis from the dungeons at Moonrise Towers, resulting in a touching reunion.
THE MERCHANT’S HOUSE
Upon entering Act 3, the player comes across Arfur Gregorio, a merchant who returned home to find that a refugee family fleeing the army of the Absolute had taken up residence in his house. There are a number of ways this situation can be resolved, from chasing out the refugees (and getting paid for it) to intimidating Arfur into letting the refugees stay.
THE FRESH MIND
Towards the end of Act 2, the player can find a mind flayer machine that allows them to communicate with a series of brains via a necromantically preserved head. One of these is the Fresh Mind, a brain taken from a child shortly after the mind flayers first attacked Baldur’s Gate.
THE WATER QUEEN’S HOUSE
In Act 3, the player can visit the Water Queen’s House, a busy temple to the vengeful sea goddess Umberlee. Speaking with high priestess Flood Tide Allandra, who is overseeing the mourning of one of the temple’s fallen sisters, begins the questline Avenged the Drowned, wherein players volunteer to track down the metal monster responsible for the death.
THE THUGS & THE ORPHAN
The streets of Baldur’s Gate are a dangerous place, as evidenced by the plight of this tiefling child who has found his parents murdered in an alleyway. Luckily for him, he is stumbled upon by one of the city’s kindlier gang members (and his somewhat less sympathetic friend).
SORCEROUS SUNDRIES PATRONS
Once they've reached Baldur’s Gate proper, players are likely to find themselves visiting the city’s premier magic shop Sorcerous Sundries. Here clusters of characters talk among themselves in what are known internally at Larian as vignettes, which help to create the impression of a place that is bustling and alive – a couple of these can be viewed to the left.
The Cats of Baldur’s Gate
I wrote a lot of Act 3’s Speak with Animals dialogues, many of these involving cats. I like cats. Here are some of my favourites..
